''ROCK ART CIOTOLA''
Artistic Movement was founded in 2018 in Italy by Raffaele Ciotola
"ROCK ART CIOTOLA'' created by Raffaele Ciotola, is a groundbreaking art movement that reinterprets historical and illustrious figures with tattoos and piercings, blending classical portraiture with modern cultural elements."
"Ciotola works challenge traditional norms and celebrate individuality, using bold visual statements to promote freedom of expression and diversity."
"Each piece in the ''ROCK ART CIOTOLA'' movement invites viewers to see historical figures in a new light, creating a dialogue between the past and present and highlighting the timeless nature of self-expression."
In this artwork, the artist Raffaele Ciotola wants to represent Her Majesty Elizabeth II in the guise of the Rock Queen. This historical character conveys authority, seriousness and struck the artist’s mind since his childhood. The respect that binds him to Her Majesty leads him to feel congeniality, so he wants to transform her, through art, into a character which can be closer to the youth of the whole world. A Queen with a look that definitely takes distance from herinstitutional role. This artwork is inspired by thegreat tenderness that R.Ciotola feels towards her, so it represents her in this way in order to attract youth’s attention not towards any ordinary old woman, but towards a Queen marking the history.
Generally Queens born live and die like all ordinary mortals, but the artist wanted to immortalize the fondness and the extraordinary tenderness of Her Majesty Elizabeth II in an unusual form, so that the young people do not remember her only on history books, but immortalized through this framework that portrays her with the same appearance that many young people love. She is represented with tattoos and piercings, taking on a disobedient and determined appearance, rebelling against stereotypes and patterns just as young people do.
Artist Statement by Raffaele Ciotola
For me, art is not just an aesthetic expression, but a cry for life, an act of resistance, and a bridge to those who feel invisible. Through my work—which ranges from Finger Art to Rock Art to Stop Homoph Art—I tell stories of identity, struggle, and hope, born from my personal experience as a gay man in a world that is still often closed and judgmental.
I believe in the revolutionary power of art as a tool for social change: my colors, shapes, and symbols aim to shake, provoke, and open an honest dialogue on issues such as racism, homophobia, and inequality. Like Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, with whom I feel a deep kinship, I use creativity to give voice to those who often go unheard—to turn pain into beauty and solitude into community.
I am an artist of my time, a “flower” blooming in the complexity of the present, carrying a message of inclusion and freedom. And with my Finger Art Ciotola, I say loud and clear: life is art, and art is life.
A Pioneer of Contemporary and Social Art
Raffaele Ciotola is a brilliant Neapolitan artist, known for his innovative and revolutionary approach to contemporary art. Born on October 17, 1964, Ciotola has masterfully blended creativity, social engagement, and artistic sensitivity, redefining the boundaries of visual expression through unique and avant-garde movements.
Ciotola is not self-taught; he is a Master of Art with a strong academic background. After earning his Artistic High School Diploma, he pursued his passion for music by studying Bel Canto (lower level – tenor) at the San Pietro a Majella Conservatory in Naples, enriching his artistic vision and expressive capacity even further.
His formal training and academic experience, combined with his deep sensitivity, allow him to explore and manipulate various artistic languages, uniquely merging tradition and innovation.
His artistic influences range from classical Neapolitan art to international avant-gardes, creating a continuous dialogue between past and present. This approach enables him to tackle contemporary social and political issues, using art as a powerful tool to raise awareness and promote change.
In 2003, he launched "Stop Homoph Art", a major artistic movement dedicated to the fight against homophobia. With this project, Ciotola fused art and activism, aiming to raise awareness about the importance of respect and inclusion for the LGBTQ+ community. Stop Homoph Art uses powerful imagery to address social issues related to discrimination and prejudice, emphasizing the urgent need for equality in modern society.
In 2018, he created "Rock Art Ciotola", a concept that reinvents the image of iconic and famous figures through a rock aesthetic, incorporating stylized tattoos and disruptive visuals that take pop art to new levels.
His latest project, "Finger Art Ciotola", stands out for its unique approach: he transforms a painted finger by dressing it in the same style, character, and symbolic elements that define his work, making it instantly recognizable as his signature. This concept explores new dimensions of expression, breaking away from traditional techniques and adding a bold touch of personalization.
Raffaele Ciotola is not just an artist—he is an innovator who turns each creation into a manifesto of freedom, expressiveness, and the fight for civil rights. His works, rich in color intensity and chiaroscuro effects, challenge both social and artistic conventions, inviting viewers to reflect on contemporary issues through an artistic lens.
His work has received broad recognition both nationally and internationally, drawing attention from critics and art professionals alike. Thanks to his brilliance and ability to convey deep messages, Raffaele Ciotola remains a beacon of innovation in the contemporary art world.
